At SummerSlam 2013, Daniel Bryan defeated John Cena in a classic match to win the WWE World Championship. Immediately afterwards, though, Randy Orton cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase and beat Bryan for the title - with some help from Triple H. The former Evolution members had turned heel to form The Authority, and Bryan would be their new nemesis.

Unfortunately, instead of building up to an Orton-Bryan rematch, WWE decided to go all-out immediately. As such, they booked the Orton versus Bryan for Night of Champions 2014, with the title on the line.

The match was decent, though with as much of a roll as Bryan was on at the time, it can be argued that Orton dragged him down a bit. Still, what really hurt was the ending - Bryan hit Orton with the running knee and pinned him, but referee Scott Armstrong delivered such a fast count that it was clear the title reign wouldn't stand. Once again, Bryan was going to be screwed out of the title.

Sure enough, the following evening on Raw, Triple H "fired" Armstrong for his fast count in a transparent gesture, then ordered the title held up, making the PPV completely meaningless.
