10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About No Mercy

1. Daddy Vs. Daughter I Quit Match

Yes No Mercy had The Undertaker losing at the event again and Big Show's damp squib of a US Title victory, but the event will no doubt be forever remembered thanks to one extremely controversial match. This was the show in which Vince McMahon wrestled his daughter Stephanie in a brutal I Quit match.

It was a match promoted above all others on the show and the buildup included some very uncomfortable and intelligence-insulting material. Physical McMahon family disputes are nothing new to the wacky world of WWE, but there was something truly haunting about watching Vince, muscles bulging and veins protruding like snakes, beat his only daughter down and choke her with a lead piper as Linda watched.

In the context of what they were trying to accomplish, the match worked, but removed from that context it just looks wrong, particularly given WWE's recent ban of man-on-woman violence and the general sanitisation of their product. The match ended with Linda throwing in the towel, saving Stephanie from further abuse as Vince rode off into the sunset with his girlfriend, Sable.
