10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About No Mercy
2. The First WWE Tag Team Champions, Kurt Angle And Vacant
Much has been made of The New Day's record-setting WWE Tag Team Title reign and rightfully so. In the modern era, it's almost unheard of, and it was no small feat to surpass the epic reign of Paul London and Brian Kendrick.
Looking through the lineage of WWE Tag Team titleholders, there are one or two odd pairs. Remember Kenzo Suzuki and Rene Dupree's run? Or the Basham Brothers? How about the awesome combination of David Otunga and Curtis Axel?
As you can see, there've been one or two dud teams in possession of the doubles straps over the years, but the the titles actually got off to the very best start at No Mercy 2002. In a tournament final, the team of Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle downed Rey Mysterio and Edge in one of the best WWE tag matches ever, a twenty-five minute scorcher that was called Match of the Year by most.
Of course, as good as the match was and as reputable as the winners were, that was then and this is now, and 'now' is a post-Benoit world in which practically all mention of the Rabid Wolverine has been erased. Hence why you won't see a picture of Benoit and Angle in WWE.com's 'Hall of Tag Team Champions' gallery and why they'll never promote this amazing contest or feature it on DVD releases.
It was an amazing start to life for the WWE Tag Team Titles, but WWE history will choose to ignore at least half of the first owners.
