10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About The Godfather

8. He Only Stayed Around So Long Due To Friendship With The Undertaker

It's fair to say that, once the Right to Censor thing had run its course, that there really wasn't that much for Charles Right to do in WWE. He was an opening match act and the novelty of the Godfather had worn off. This wasn't 1999 anymore, and he didn't fit in. Once the RTC disbanded as the Invasion began, Godfather disappeared for a little while, resurfacing in early 2002 under his old gimmick. This time he claimed to be running an 'above board' enterprise. His return wasn't exactly a success - the entrance music and the hos still generated a pop, but he was mainly used as an enhancement talent, either squashed on Raw or confined to Velocity and dark matches. He dropped off the radar, with his most notable appearance coming during Billy and Chuck's infamous commitment ceremony in September. After one or two more brief appearances, Godfather was released (by mutual consent) in December and left WWE/wrestling for a few years. Of course, given Wright's limited ability level - he couldn't exactly hang with the superworkers of the Ruthless Aggression era - some questioned how he managed to stay employed for so long, anyway. The answer was his close relationship to locker-room leader The Undertaker. Wright was protected and survived for as long as he did because he was besties with The Deadman. The two had been friends before Wright even made it to WWE. This is not a knock on Wright, who was supposedly one of the most well-liked members of the locker room back then, but it's another example of the power of The Phenom and a possible case of him playing backstage politics to keep his buddies around. How else do you explain Godfather's continued/repeated employment? Not something WWE will want you to ponder for long, anyway.
