10 Things You Didn't Know About Eddie Guerrero
7. He Was In Constant Pain During The Last Year Of His Life
Some say that Eddie Guerrero had one of, if not the, best year of his career in 2005 but what a lot of people don't know is that Eddie's superlative performances came at a time when Latino Heat was a physical wreck. Eddie had stellar matches with Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit and Batista but privately he was falling apart. Years of bumping in hard rings (rings in Mexico and Japan, where Eddie made his living before breaking into the US, were even harder than those in America) and the nagging injuries that come with wrestling had left Eddie with shoulder, knee, back, hamstring, hip and other problems.
On the Eddie Guerrero tribute show, Batista made reference to Eddie being in pain but few fans knew the true extent of the damage. Bob 'Hardcore' Holly revealed in his eye-opening autobiography The Hardcore Truth that in the months leading up to his untimely death that Eddie would just lie down in agony on the trainer's table until ten minutes before his match when he would have an energy drink, go through the curtain and put on such a good show that you would never suspect that he was suffering. Holly said one of the saddest things was seeing Eddie lying down in such pain that he wasn't sure whether he needed to go to the bathroom or not.
WWE should have given Eddie time off in 2005. He was clearly struggling to cope with the schedule and could have used a break to heal up. Had they done so, Eddie might still be with us today.
