10 Things You Didn't Know About Eddie Guerrero
6. He Was Relieved When WWE Took The Title Off Of Him
Nobody believed that Eddie Guerrero could win 'the big one'. He was a massive underdog going into his WWE Championship match with Brock Lesnar at No Way Out 2004. Lesnar was everything that WWE looked for in a headliner and had been pushed to the moon in recent years whereas Eddie was considered by many to be too small to headline, despite his obvious talent. Plus Eddie had a well-documented history of drug and alcohol problems and many thought that WWE would be taking a huge risk by putting the strap on him.
It was to the shock of just about everybody, then, when Eddie pinned Brock in a thirty minute stunner in front of a sold out Cow Palace. The crowd (many of whom were Hispanic) erupted for the title change. It was a great moment for Eddie, one he had worked his whole life to achieve while never thinking it would actually happen. But life is tough at the top and Eddie struggled with the pressure of carrying the SmackDown brand. When Lesnar left the company and Angle was out injured after WrestleMania XX, WWE was short of headliners and struggled at the domestic box-office. Eddie started taking things like ratings, buy rates and attendance very personally.
He was also injured and irritable while trying his best to carry the show. He notably snapped at a small group of fans who were chanting 'Eddie sucks' during a house show in Germany, grabbing the mike and saying 'Eddie doesn't suck, Germany sucks' and proceeding to play heel through the match, leaving many spectators dumbfounded. Guerrero was relieved when WWE decided to put the title on JBL at the 2004 Great American Bash. Eddie could more than handle the pressure inside the ring but it was all of the extra responsibility that proved to be the real test for the sensitive and passionate Latino Heat.
