Looking back, it's quite obvious that Vince McMahon was high on Marc Mero upon drafting him into the WWF. Mere months after making his debut, Mero bagged the vacant Intercontinental Title by defeating Faarooq in a tournament final. The sky seemed to be the limit for the talented newcomer.

For Mero, becoming the new Intercontinental titleholder proved that the office had faith in his abilities. Chinks would quickly begin to show in that faith however, because the guy only held the title for around a month before dropping it to Triple H.

This was an extremely disappointing moment for Marc, because he realised that things weren't going smoothly in his WWF career.

Mero had been anticipating a lengthy run with the secondary gold, but was already feeling the pressure brought on by that weight of expectation by the time he had won it. Once he'd lost the title to Hunter, doubts started to creep into his mind as to whether he was still McMahon's pet project.
