10 Things You Didn't Know About Raven

3. He Started Out As A Manager

Raven’s wrestling fame came primarily from a leadership role, although you could say that the way he led the Nest and the Flock was as good as anti-leadership. Still, he was the man at the front of those two groups, when wrestling was massive and Raven was a big name star.

Before Raven, there was Johnny Polo, a spoiled kid who always seemed to hang out with the bullies. Funny how that works, isn’t it? Johnny Polo made his debut in WWF in 1994 as the initial manager of Adam Bomb, one of the greatest wacky gimmicks of the time. The partnership lasted for a few months before Polo moved onto The Quebecers, who he led to a number of WWF Tag Team Championship reigns.

Polo also worked on commentary and behind the scenes, although it was as a manager that he was primarily used. Strangely enough, the fantastic promo skills that eventually became his calling card weren’t displayed at this point, although that can be put down to different times and a different character. The rich kid wasn’t going to wax lyrical about the nihilism of the world, after all.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
