10 Things You Didn't Know About The Big Boss Man

7. Nervous Nightstick

The Big Boss Man was never far away from his iconic black nightstick. During his heel run in the '80s, the villainous Boss Man would beat the tar out of opponents with his weapon, usually after he'd handcuffed them to the ring ropes. In addition to swinging the stick into opponent's skulls and ribcages, The Boss Man was also highly-skilled in twirling the stick around in his hands at lightning speeds. Even the finest majorettes in the country couldn't twirl a baton as well as the Boss Man. But that expert twirling was no accident - it came from hours and hours of supposedly fanatical, almost obsessive practice. Many a time the Boss Man could be found backstage, eating with one hand and practicing his twirl with the other. In his autobiography "Pure Dynamite", Tom 'Dynamite Kid' Billington recounted the night the Big Boss Man was to make his WWF debut. Under orders from Vince McMahon to twirl the nightstick like Bruce Lee with a set of nunchaku, he practiced nervously for hours before finally walking through the curtain into the arena as intimidating as possible. That was until the nervous Traylor lost his grip on the spinning stick, and it flew into the crowd. The formidable aura of the Boss Man was almost over before it got a chance to start, as fans guffawed at the clumsy giant grasping for his sailing stick like a little leaguer hoping to catch the ball.
