10 Things You Didn't Know About The Four Horsemen

9. The Name Came About By Chance

It might just be the coolest stable name in the history of pro wrestling factions. The Four Horsemen? Undeniably cool. Is there a better use of Christian imagery in pro wrestling? The answer is no.

With that in mind, is it surprising that the name came about somewhat by chance? The group was formed almost by mistake, when time constraints forced three interviews to be jammed into one segment. Ric Flair was world champion, the Andersons were tag champions and Tully was US champion, and the four (along with J.J. Dillon) took over an interview segment to brag about their success. Ever the wordsmith, Arn then uttered the words that changed wrestling forever;

"Never in the history of wrestling have so few wreaked so much havoc over everyone else – that you’d have to go back in history books to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." The Enforcer held up four fingers as he made his claim, and the rest is history.

This is a point that cannot be understated, and it gives a good indication of why WWE will never create a stable fit to lace the Horsemen's boots. The coolest stable name in wrestling history came about thanks to a throwaway line in an unscripted promo. What would the group be called in WWE today? I dread to think.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
