10 Things You Didn't Know About WWE In 1991

2. A Former Ringside Physician Was Found Guilty For Steroid Distribution

The start of the WWF€™s problems with steroids can be traced back to Dr. George T. Zahorian, III. In the 1980s, he was a physician for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission and was seated ringside when the WWF would do shows at the Philadelphia Spectrum and other arenas throughout the state. On July 4, 1991, he was found guilty of 12 counts of selling steroids without medical purpose, four of which were to WWF superstars like Roddy Piper and Rick Martel. WWF Champion Hulk Hogan was supposed to testify at the trial, but the judge dismissed his subpoena. Zahorian was also notable because Linda McMahon tipped off Pat Patterson not to use him as a ringside physician in the late 1980s because a law was passed in 1988 banning anabolic steroids. This information was used against Linda in her senatorial campaigns these past couple years.
