Controversy time.

Triple H rejigged D-Generation X 24 hours after Shawn Michaels lost the WWF Title at WrestleMania XIV. Chyna stayed by Trips' side, he became the new leader, The New Age Outlaws were installed as full-time members and X-Pac debuted with a cutting promo about Eric Bischoff and WCW.

Fans started to view DX as a faction that were just too cool to hate. They re-emphasised the "Suck It" catchphrase, started feuding with The Nation and... became even better than the original incarnation. Some won't take kindly to reading that, but it's true.

DX 2.0 was no longer a vehicle to push Michaels - it was a vehicle to push everyone involved, and they all benefited by association to an already-over gimmick. The spring and summer of '98 was a glorious period for degenerates.
