10 Things You Learn From Watching 1991 On The WWE Network

4. Seeing A Wedding Headline SummerSlam Is Still Weird

SummerSlam 1991 is best-remembered for two things. Firstly, an absolutely amazing WWF Intercontinental Title match between Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect. Secondly, the televised wedding between Randy Savage and Miss. Elizabeth. The longest bout on the card, Hart vs. Perfect was in-ring beauty next to the wedding's storyline emotion.

On the marquee, the actual headline match was The Ultimate Warrior teaming with Hulk Hogan to face Sgt. Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa and General Adnan. Due to the limitations of the talent in that handicap situation, it paled in comparison to the atmosphere of the wedding. Savage tying the knot with Liz was SummerSlam's real main event.

Even to this day, that's an odd sentence. It's pretty difficult to imagine WWE running something like this today. For example, imagine SummerSlam 2016 ended with a storyline wedding rather than a World Title match. It'd be pretty challenging to pull off in the current climate.

Fans adored Elizabeth and Randy though, so the WWF managed to make the wedding feel natural. Still, it's weird that a match didn't close out one of the biggest shows of the year.
