10 Times A Special Guest Referee Actually Improved A Wrestling Match

5. Umaga Vs. Bobby Lashley (WrestleMania 23) - Ref: Stone Cold

The conceit of this match was about as dumb as they come: A "hair vs. hair" match between Donald Trump and Vince McMahon, with Lashley and Umaga basically acting as avatars for the two obnoxious millionaires. (Of course, there are much more racist tones to view this idea through, but we'll just leave it at that.) What J.R. referred to as "hands on officiating," others might view as being "the enforcer," which is certainly how Stone Cold applied himself in this match. Whenever things got out of hand and someone (usually Umaga) tried to ignore the rules, The Rattlesnake didn't just get up in his face, he physically made them heed his warnings. This also allowed for some welcome physicality between Stone Cold and Vince (and Shane...and whoever else got in his way). And although the in-ring action between Umaga and Lashley was pretty terrific, the stakes surrounding it often fell flat. Thankfully, Austin was able to elevate the match and add some much-needed grounding. Basically, Stone Cold saved what might have been one of the tackiest gimmick matches in recent history.
