10 Times Awesome WWE Matches Became Nightmares
4. Goldberg Vs The Fiend - Super Showdown 2020
The Fiend Bray Wyatt was the hottest act in WWE heading into Super Showdown 2020. Wyatt’s creative work to reinvent himself finally started to pay off with what could have been an Undertaker-like run in popularity. A win over WCW legend Goldberg would have solidified his status as a top star and unstoppable monster. Unfortunately, WWE had other plans.
Goldberg made a last-second powerplay and refused to put Wyatt over. He claimed that a loss to a villain, like The Fiend, would do irreparable damage to his superhero-like character. Thus, irreparable damage was instead inflicted on Wyatt: a younger full-time member of the WWE roster.
The match was a short squash that lasted just under three minutes. Goldberg won the WWE Universal Championship with a glorified suplex that commentators hopelessly called a Jackhammer. The loss outraged many WWE fans, which included “Home Alone” actor and long time wrestling fan Macaulay Culkin tweeting that he had cancelled his WrestleMania 36 tickets. The Fiend is only now starting to recover from the loss, and he may never regain the momentum he once had.
