Finn Balor looked destined for a run on top in WWE after already becoming an international star as the leader of the Bullet Club. After a successful stay in NXT, which included winning the NXT Championship, Balor was drafted to Raw. He then defeated Roman Reigns for the right to face Seth Rollins for the newly created WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam 2016.

Their match was shaping up to be an instant classic before they took the action outside the ring. Rollins performed a controversial buckle bomb on Balor into the guard rail. Balor landed awkwardly and appeared to be hurt. He somehow finished the match and secured the win to become WWE’s first Universal Champion.

However, reports soon surfaced that Balor had been seriously injured by Rollin’s buckle bomb. The next night on Raw, he surrendered the title due to a torn shoulder labrum, which would require surgery. After months on the shelf, Balor returned but was never a serious world championship contender again. He never regained his old championship form and eventually was sent back to NXT, where he has prospered.
