10 Times Awesome WWE Matches Became Nightmares

3. Brock Lesnar Vs Goldberg - WrestleMania 20

Survivor Series 2003 set the ball in motion for what should have been an epic title vs. title showdown. World Heavyweight Champion Goldberg and WWE Champion Brock Lesnar’s simple 30-second backstage interaction was the shot heard around the wrestling world.

What a difference a few short months would make.

Both Goldberg and Lesnar dropped their respective championships in the months following Survivor Series. The title vs. title mega-match was not to be. Both had given their notice to WWE with rumors of one or both being disgruntled. This led to speculation that there would be a walkout before the match started, so WWE inserted Stone Cold Steve Austin as the special referee to salvage a potentially embarrassing situation at WrestleMania XX.

The match was an awkward mess with annoying stalling tactics, and fans quickly turned on it with a steady stream of boos and chants. Following Goldberg's win over Lesnar, Austin won back an angry MSG crowd by stunning both and sending them packing from WWE. Fittingly, one of WrestleMania’s biggest letdowns ended with the special referee celebrating in the ring.
