Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels had undeniable chemistry in the ring going back to their tag team days in the Hart Foundation and Rockers. Their singles clashes over the WWE Intercontinental Championship and WWE Championship had fans on the edge of their seats with every encounter.

Their WWE Championship match at Survivor Series 1997 is legendary, but not for their work inside the ring. Leading up to the match, WWE Champion Bret Hart had signed with rival WCW. McMahon wanted the belt dropped at Survivor Series in Montreal. Not wanting to lose in his home country, Hart countered with the idea of surrendering the title on RAW.

Paranoid that he would end up on WCW television with the WWE Championship, McMahon hatched a screw job to lift the title without Hart’s knowledge. Hart believed the match would end in a double disqualification. Instead, during a spot in which Michaels reversed the Sharpshooter, referee Earl Hebner called for the bell even though Hart did not submit. Chaos ensued as Hart destroyed WWE equipment, spat on McMahon, and punched him out backstage.
