10 Times Controversy Inspired WWE Changes
4. Eddie Guerrero's Death Initiates Wellness Programme
It's unfortunate that the deaths of two of WWE's greatest underdogs inspired such needed change within the company and that they never had a chance to benefit from the precautions that are in place today.
Eddie Guerrero was (like Chris Benoit) one of WWE's most beloved figures and, after winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XX, inspired millions into believing that anything was possible with plenty of hard work and determination.
Yet his death in 2006 revealed a harrowing subplot of drug abuse that had led to the narrowing of his arteries and a dangerously enlarged heart - this in turn planted the seeds for his passing at the hands of heart failure.
WWE paid the price for refusing to test their athletes for steroids since 1996 and were forced into bringing the Talent Wellness Program into play.
It seems to have done the trick and any star that is found to have tested positive for a banned substance on one occasion has been subsequently banned for 30 days. The second offence involves a 60 day ban and the third violation results in immediate termination.
When risking their livelihoods is on the cards, you quickly find out which stars are willing to change their ways and save themselves from their own demons.
