While much of the extreme behaviour that got ECW so much attention would now be considered borderline normal, the company’s relationship with its fans remains above and beyond the norm in modern-day pro wrestling. Yes, companies can forge meaningful relationships with their audience via the modern marvel of social media, but when it comes to an up-close and personal connection, ECW trumped all.

Is there a better example of this than Spike Dudley and his famous crowd surfing experience? The crowd surfing itself is one thing, but imagine a modern-day match where someone powerbombs their opponent into the crowd. Sure, it might happen on NXT where the ‘crowd’ in question is a bunch of Performance Center geeks, but we all know that that isn’t the point being made.

At ECW As Good As It Gets 1997, Bam Bam Bigelow straight up powerbombed Spike Dudley into the paying audience. Rather than collapsing under the 150lb weight of Spike, the masses instead held him aloft, carrying Spike’s prone body around the arena.

There are few better examples of the loyalty and commitment that ECW fans had toward the promotion.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
