10 Times Ego Cost Wrestlers Everything
3. Bret Hart = Superhero
No, there's nothing new to say about ye olde screwjob.
Stick with this though, 'cause it really is quite fascinating to think about. Everybody blames Vince McMahon, Shawn Michaels, Earl Hebner and others for conspiring to f*ck Bret Hart over at Survivor Series 1997 - that's fair, and they bloody did, but...what about Bret's part in things?
Refusing to drop the WWF Title in Canada was a strange power play from somebody who claimed to lead by example. Nobody's defending what McMahon, HBK etc did, and yet Hart definitely contributed to his own WWF empire crumbling by being so egocentric right before a major pay-per-view.
He looked upon himself as a real-life superhero, and contested that his home nation would be crushed if he lost. Really? That's doubtful. Life would've marched on no bother had Michaels bagged the belt in Montreal on 9 November '97.
The 'Hitman' got into his own head here. That shoved him closer to the exit door, and towards a quite miserable run in WCW.
