There's no denying that Ronda Rousey is one of the most important and iconic sportspeople of our time.

An Olympic medallist, UFC's first female champion, and one third of the first all-female WrestleMania main event, Rousey's glittering resume cannot be disputed, no matter how hard she tries to make wrestling fans hate her.

Rousey's nickname of "Rowdy" actually pre-dates her first appearance in WWE by several years. She was originally hesitant to take on the nickname given to her by friends, but was eventually persuaded by the wrestling legend himself.

Ronda and Roddy met through their shared trainer, Gene LaBell in 2012/2013 (by Piper's own admission his "timing's not great").

Roddy was more than happy to hand down his legendary nickname, which he gained during his time working in San Francisco in the 70s, and the two became firm friends right up until his death in 2015.

Rousey has continued to honour her hero in her work. She dedicated her victory over Bethe Correia at UFC 190 to him and even wore one of his jackets to the ring when making her WWE debut.

A sweet tale of two of their respective generations' best, Ronda and Roddy shared far more than just a moniker.
