As he would with many of his rivals, Vince McMahon had the last laugh. Considered by many to be the death of the WWF/WWE as a truly innovative company, 23 March 2001 will nonetheless go down in history as a remarkable date. On that day, McMahon purchased the remnants of WCW and eradicated the last of his competition.

Mere days later, WCW presented the final ever episode of Monday Nitro on March 26. The show was a simulcast with WWF Raw, meaning Vince would appear on the WCW flagship and brag about owning the company. Nobody watching could believe what they were seeing. It was quite the extraordinary situation.

In reality, McMahon had purchased 24 talent contracts from the ailing promotion, as well as various WCW trademarks and event titles. He must have felt on top of the world as he salivated over the near future, being able to create a storyline pitting his WWF troops against invading WCW forces.

23 March 2001 will forever be remembered as one of the most shocking days in pro wrestling history: it was inconceivable to picture Vince McMahon owning WCW.
