10 Times Vince McMahon Backed The Wrong Guy

2. Chris Benoit

"It all begins again." That was the slogan at WrestleMania 20 when Chris Benoit got to headline the show in Madison Square Garden against Triple H and Shawn Michaels. The idea behind putting Benoit in the match was to not only give a deserving wrestler the chance to headline WrestleMania, but also to show that they could create a new main event star. When Benoit made Triple H out to become the World Champion, it was supposed to solidify Benoit as a top guy. Over the next few months, Benoit really didn't prove to be any kind of draw. He ended up dropping the World Title to Randy Orton at SummerSlam 2004 and he was never able to get back to that main event champion level. The high expectations that WWE had for him were never really met. Part of it was because he wasn't really a big guy and his promo skills were average at best. The sad story about Benoit is that he committed a double murder suicide in 2007 when he killed his wife and young son along with himself. McMahon had no idea that was ever going to happen obviously. Benoit's a name that has been written out of WWE's history books with good reason. It's one of the saddest stories in wrestling history. No doubt about that.
