10 Times WCW Broke With Reality

5. The Yeti

The main event of Halloween Havoc 1995 survives in wrestling's collective memory as a fevered height point of WCW's madness. Among the strangeness surrounding Hulk Hogan's world heavyweight championship match with the Giant, nothing stands out as weirder than the Yeti.

To ensure the Giant beat Hogan, the Dungeon of Doom's Kevin Sullivan unveiled an 'insurance policy' - the Yeti. For a start, the creature didn't look like the traditional hairy abominable snowman at all. It was wrapped in bandages, and looked more like a mummy than a yeti.

And secondly, it was a yeti - a mythical creature that didn't exist. It wasn't even a wrestler taking on the persona of a yeti to be more intimidating. The Yeti thawed from a block of ice. He was supposed to be the 'real' thing.

To complete the nightmarish unreality of the Yeti, the commentators seemed incapable of saying the word 'yeti'. They announced it as the 'yhetay', even as it shambled into the ring to bear-hug Hogan into submission. The Yeti was perhaps WCW's weirdest-ever character, and his participation at Halloween Havoc one of its most inexplicably bizarre moments.
