10 Times WCW Went Too Far

4. Drunk Scott Hall

Scott Hall is one of pro wrestling's most curious legends. A four-time WWF Intercontinental champion, Hall was one of the most influential and important performers of the whole Attitude Era, a magnetic character who competed in iconic matches and gave birth to a whole new world of wrestling. He was also a chronic underachiever, a man who could have ruled the world were it not for personal demons and substance abuse issues.

Hall had a well-documented battle with alcohol, so it stands to reason that thoughtful, considerate WCW decided to make him an on-screen alcoholic. 1998 was the year and Hall had spent much of it in and out of rehab, doing the occasional 30-day stint before returning to a life of hard boozing and misdemeanours. WCW brought this to television, having him appear drunk on camera, with a beverage in hand.

Now, we're living in a world where 'Hangman' Adam Page became one of wrestling's biggest babyfaces by enjoying a drink, but you don't need to be a doctor to see the differences. Hall was going through personal hell, a personal hell that was lived out in front of millions of customers every Monday night. He slurred his speech and occasionally vomited, with the announcers increasing their disgust with every passing incident.

Take your personality and turn it up to 11, they say. Someone in WCW misinterpreted this, thinking it meant 'take a real life disease and turn it up to 11'.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
