10 Times WCW Went Too Far

3. Oklahoma

Taking potshots at the other company wasn't exactly rare during the Monday Night Wars, but few shots were as hurtful, personal and unnecessary as WCW's insulting parody of Jim Ross. Ed Ferrara portrayed Oklahoma, a mockery of the famous WWE commentator, complete with trademark black hat and love of BBQ sauce. That would have been lame enough, but WCW deemed it necessary to go further, mocking JR's Bell's palsy. A step too far, to say the least.

WCW eventually woke up to the disgusting nature of that mockery and dropped it, although the Oklahoma character remained an integral part of the show. What's more, the decision was made to develop him into a terrible misogynist, a gimmick that reached a depressing low point when he brought out a doctor to rip then-WCW Cruiserweight Champion Madusa apart.

Oklahoma went on to win the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, becoming the heaviest champion in the history of the title. Oklahoma was a disgusting miss from the start, picking up insulting actions and characteristics with every passing week. Mocking physical disability, denigrating women and all the rest, it was further proof that WCW was creatively circling the drain.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
