10 Times Wrestlers Brought Old Gimmicks Back (For One Night Only)
1. "American Badass" Undertaker (WrestleMania 36)
Following his loss to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33, Undertaker began doing what he'd rarely ever done before: he began to break character.
He had an active social media account, allowed pictures of his family to be released, and featured in documentaries as Mark Calaway. These were things that the Deadman of old would never have even considered.
The American Badass, however, was much closer to the man portraying him than the Lord of Darkness. Arriving in mid-2000, Undertaker drastically morphed into a tough-as-nails biker, riding his Harley Davidson to the ring and giving him more freedom in his promos. Over the next four years he continued this character, with a minor tweak near the end, rechristening himself as Big Evil, before reverting to the classic Undertaker from WrestleMania XX and for the remainder of his career.
After Mania 33, his character veil slowly lifted but still featured as The Undertaker on television. That is until AJ Styles began to field challenges to Taker leading up to WrestleMania 36, at which point Styles ripped to veil away completely by referring to him under his real name. At the event, the two competed in a cinematic Boneyard Match, with Calaway competing as the American Badass one more time, defeating Styles before riding into the sunset.
At Survivor Series that year, the Deadman would appear one more time, officially announcing his retirement.
