10 Times Wrestlers Fooled You Into Thinking They Were Someone Else
6. Ric Flair As The Black Scorpion
When the mysterious Black Scorpion began haunting Sting in his pursuit of the NWA Championship, fans were instantly intrigued to see who would be revealed as the man under the mask. The problem was, WCW themselves didn’t even know who that man would be.
Billed as someone from Sting’s past, the Scorpion was voiced by Ole Anderson. With their history in the Four Horsemen, it would have made perfect sense for him to be the man behind the black magic. Sadly for WCW, Ole broke his arm just weeks into the storyline, which took him out of the running.
This led to WCW execs scrambling for a replacement, which they eventually found in former WCCW worker, Al Perez. Al didn’t like the idea of doing the honours for Sting and was promptly told where to go; all of which left WCW in quite the spot of bother.
The feud climaxed at Starrcade '90, with the two adversaries scheduled to meet inside a steel cage. As was par for the course in WCW, management eventually made the call to reliable Ric Flair and, at last, WCW had their Scorpion. Better still, it made just enough sense to salvage a pretty unsalvageable scenario.
After 18 minutes of action, it was clear to any true WCW fan that the Scorpion was Ric Flair. However, if the style, mannerisms and moves weren’t enough of a clue, the Scorpion unmasked, revealing himself for all to see.
