10 Times Wrestlers Quit Before Major PPVs
8. Jeff Jarrett (WWF No Mercy ’99)
Jeff Jarrett was a favourite of booker Vince Russo in ’99, hence why he was booked so prominently on WWF TV.
Just look to SummerSlam that year where he beat D’Lo Brown for both the WWF European and Intercontinental Championships. Jarrett would give away the European strap to Mark Henry but he would remain IC Champ, beating D’Lo Brown once again to remain Champ at (the exclusive UK PPV) Rebellion, before beginning a battle of the sexes feud with Chyna, retaining the title against her by disqualification at Unforgiven. Jarrett and Chyna were supposed to originally wrestle at Rebellion where Jarrett would finally drop the title to her but due to the feud’s popularity, Russo decided to extend it one month.
This caused issues. Vince Russo had left for WCW in October and Jeff Jarrett decided to follow him and leave too, quitting the WWF for what he felt were better pushes and prospects with Russo booking (he wasn’t necessarily wrong, somehow winning the WCW World Championship a staggering four times in the span of one month there).
Jarrett’s contract expired a day before WWF’s No Mercy PPV. He had already quit the WWF for WCW when he came in for a one-off appearance at No Mercy to drop the title to Chyna (after holding up Vince McMahon for a considerable amount of money to do so).
