5. Shinsuke Nakamura (IWGP Heavyweight And IGF's IWGP Heavyweight)
New Japan's founder, the legendary Antonio Inoki, left his own promotion in 2006 amidst controversy surrounding the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and his business-killing obsession with MMA. Inoki founded a new, smaller promotion known as the Inoki Genome Federation and eventually took renegade champ Brock Lesnar with him.
With New Japan's main title held up by The Beast over financial disputes, the promotion created a new heavyweight title for loyal stars like Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shinsuke Nakamura to hold. All these title hold-ups and mishaps finally came to an end when Kurt Angle beat Lesnar for the IGF version of the title and returned it to New Japan for an eventual double World title bout with Nakamura.
The King of Strong Style defeated The Olympic Hero, finally putting an end to the championship madness in the process. Presented as the saviour of New Japan's heavyweight division afterwards, this remains of the most pivotal moments in Nakamura's career. Having redeemed himself finally from the disastrous Tokyo Dome main event with Lesnar two years prior in '06, Nakamura was ready to reign as New Japan's ace.
Sadly for the former super rookie, Keiji Muto and Tanahashi had other ideas...
