10 Times Wrestling Shows Ended In Scandals
9. Starrcade 1997
It was so easy to book this. So easy. How WCW manage to make such a spectacular meal of this continues to mystify everyone to this day.
The company was on top of the wrestling world. Nitro had been trouncing Raw in the Monday Night Wars. Vince McMahon was still trying to figure who his next big stars would be. And the nWo vs. Sting feud was without a doubt the biggest thing happening in pro wrestling.
It would not too far fetched to suggest the Sting vs. Hogan main event at that year’s Starrcade was the biggest wrestling match of the decade up until that point. Surely, surely Sting had to win this clean and conclude what had been one of the most memorable rivalries of all time. It was not to be though.
In a move that could only be described as quintessentially WCW, Eric Bischoff and co. came up with a wildly convoluted ending to the main event. Hogan would drop the Big Leg on Stinger and the heel referee would do a fast count. Then Bret Hart would come out, throw out the decision, because apparently he was also General Manager of Starrcade, and restart the match.
Unfortunately all of it collapsed in on itself when the referee somehow failed to do the fast count. This meant Hogan had beaten Sting clean, and Bret Hart had forced the match to restart for no reason. Oh and the ending was also a screwjob when Hart simply called for the bell after Sting had locked in the Scorpion Death Lock. Because… Bret Hart, submission, screwjob, geddit?
