10 Times WWE Creative Changed A Match On The Fly
6. Sheamus Winning The United States Championship At WrestleMania 37
Since the pandemic was still at large, WWE had to find a way to incorporate the fans into the live programming and came up with the ThunderDome. WWE moved its programming to the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, into a bio-secure bubble with LED screens around the ring to display a virtual audience who joined the show via videoconferencing.
However, the company couldn't bring live audiences to its events because of the pandemic until Florida loosened its restrictions in August 2020, and WrestleMania 37 became the first time WWE had live fans in attendance during that period.
14 matches took place across both nights, and the United States Championship match between Matt Riddle and Sheamus was one of them. The Celtic Warrior defeated Riddle in a 10-minute banger to win his third United States Championship. However, according to Fightful Select, it was a last-minute decision from WWE, as the original plan was to have Riddle retain the title. WWE decided to put the title on Sheamus in hopes of continuing the rivalry between the two stars, with Riddle getting a re-match at WrestleMania Backlash. However, things didn't go that way as Riddle moved on to form RKBro with Randy Orton, and Sheamus dropped the title to Damian Priest at SummerSlam 2021.
