10 Times WWE Did Exactly What The Wrestlers DIDN'T Want

Ahh yes, this again.

It is genuinely baffling to think of the variety of discussions and arguments where this thing gets brought up. None of whom are positive. In early 2013, 434 days into his legendary run as WWE Champion, CM Punk dropped his title to the Rock. The Rock.

Of course, this was all done to set up Rock-Cena 2 at that year’s WrestleMania. But seriously, over a year’s worth of storytelling and character work, and it was all reduced to a secondary plot device just so the company’s chosen top guy and a part-timer could have their rematch in the main event of ‘Mania.

As you can guess there was no one more pissed off about it then Punk himself. He even tried to get this changed to a Triple Threat involving him, Cena and Rock; if the reports are to be believed. Surprise, surprise, that idea got shut down too.

There was a tremendous sense of irony to all this. Two years ago, during the legendary Pipe Bomb promo that started it all, Punk had cited the fact that Dwayne Johnson being in the main event of the following year’s WrestleMania and not him, was one of his biggest grievances. As the months passed and Punk grew into his reign, it genuinely felt like a moving of the needle; that all the effort and hard work was finally going to get him where he wanted to be.

"Nah", said Vince. Punk was relegated from the main event scene yet again at expense of Dwayne. And it was the beginning of the end of Punk’s wrestling career altogether.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
