Stacy ‘The Kat’ Carter is remembered by most fans for two things in pro wrestling. The first for Armageddon (1999), where after she won the Women’s Championship in a Four Corners Evening Gown Pool match (how times have changed), she flashed the crowd and exposed her breasts in the first instance of intentional nudity in WWF history. The second for once being married to Jerry “The King” Lawler in real life.

Their marriage was an issue behind the scenes in the WWF when Stacy started causing problems with creative writers backstage, with it being a constant battle to get her to agree to certain angles and promos. This led to Vince McMahon terminating her contract.

Jim Ross detailed the circumstances on his Grilling JR podcast:

“She was a sweetheart, I thought, but she apparently, based on what the writers said, she was too hard to work with. So, they caught Vince on a day when he was not in a really great mood, apparently. I got called in Vince’s office, ‘I want her gone’. What? ‘I want her gone today.’”

JR, who was Head of Talent Relations, along with Bruce Prichard were tasked with delivering the news to Lawler first out of respect to his contributions to the company. Lawler didn’t react well to it, immediately threatening to go to WCW (even though they were on the verge of closing). Jerry gave them the ultimatum “Well, if she goes, I go.”

It put JR in an awkward decision, who didn’t want to break up his on screen partnership with King. So Lawler quit the promotion for a brief time, only to return that same year after he and Carter had broken up.
