It was a WWE.com news bulletin, rather than a triumphant return promo, that announced the news that Daniel Bryan had at last been cleared by company doctors to return to the ring, two years after his enforced retirement.

In some ways, though, that actually made it all the more surprising. While there was plenty of build-up in the shape of mounting tensions between Shane, KO and Zayn, we were basically only two weeks from the Show of Shows when they decided to drop the bombshell.

It seemed like the opportunity had been and gone, convincing many of us that Vince McMahon would never make the U-turn; that Bryan - if he wanted to resume his wrestling career at all - would have to return to the independent circuit instead.

Perhaps the explanation for how slapdash this all appeared is that the addition of this match to the WrestleMania 34 card was every bit as last-minute behind the cameras as it was in front of them. Maybe someone just woke up that day in a good mood and gave it the green-light on a whim.
