10 Times WWE Got "The Guy" Wrong

7. Dean Ambrose

Now this is a bit of an odd one.

A then-Dean Ambrose had proven time and time again that he could be a reliable player for WWE during his run alongside and after The Shield. And in the wake of leaving the company in 2019, he'd very much flourish into a top-level superstar/champion capable of being the face of a company in AEW.

But things just never really clicked for Jon Moxley when he was finally handed the top WWE guy ball back in 2016.

In the wake of the brands being split for the first time since 2011, the super popular Ambrose was trusted with leading the blue brand as its WWE Champion, sitting atop an exciting roster boasting the likes of John Cena, AJ Styles, Bray Wyatt, and Randy Orton.

Rather than a white hot run for the 'Lunatic Fringe' following his awesome Money in the Bank cash-in and enjoyable defences against his former Shield pals, though, his blue show World title reign was largely overshadowed by the aforementioned Cena/Styles rivalry.

His forgettable defence against Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam and disastrous interview with 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin didn't do the unconvincing champ any favours either.

Styles would ultimately bring that disappointing time on top of the mountain to an end at Backlash and enjoy a more memorable spell on top.

Mox definitely showed that he had it in him to be the guy later down the road. So, this was largely just a case of the right guy at the wrong time - or maybe in the wrong place.
