10 Times WWE Got "The Guy" Wrong

6. Jinder Mahal

A year on from Dean Ambrose failing to really set the world on fire as SmackDown's World champ, another star's ill-advised reign would make that 'Lunatic's run look like, well, a home run.

Not really, but you get the point.

A freshly jacked Jinder Mahal suddenly emerged as a new WWE title contender following on from WrestleMania 33.

And once again, Vince McMahon's obsession with big lads and bulging physiques led to the 'Modern Day Maharaja' lifting his first (and only) piece of World title gold. But, away from the initial shock of seeing him actually conquer Randy Orton at Backlash 2017, the whole run was an unmitigated failure.

Title contests against Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura were some of the dullest of the decade - and that's without even taking into account the horrendous racism present in that latter program.

The properly terrible run was seemingly WWE's way of trying to appeal to the Indian market. But it didn't work, and by the time he did actually make it over to the country with the company, he was actually no longer holding the strap and being bested by Triple H at a house show.
