10 Times WWE Got "The Guy" Wrong
9. Rey Mysterio

In the minds of WWE writers, Rey Mysterio's 2006 title run was probably supposed to go something like this...
He receives a hero's ovation after lifting the belt at WrestleMania 22, is instantly taken to as a credible heavyweight champion and the resulting David vs Goliath feuds become the stuff of wrestling legend.
Reality was a little different. The "Bizarro Land" Chicago crowd didn't get behind Rey's coronation, and in the months that followed he simply wasn't presented or viewed as a legitimate main event wrestler.
Rey had plenty of talent - perhaps more than almost anyone else on the WWE roster, in fact - but the writers tried too hard to shoe-horn him into a position for which he wasn't suited, and his career paid the price thereafter.
