What The Main Event Should Have Been: Steve Austin vs. HHH.

Steve Austin could be one stubborn S.O.B. at times. Triple H was trying to work his way up the card as a main event heel, but needed to work with a top star to solidify his position. A win against Austin in the main event of SummerSlam with Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura as the ref would have instantly made him. Austin wasn’t too keen on the idea. So Mick Foley was added to the match, and ended up winning the title by pinning Austin. It felt wrong. That was Hunter’s night.

The build up to the show itself was a gigantic mess. At one point Chyna was slotted to face The Texas Rattlesnake in a singles match, and it wasn’t until the week before the show that Foley was inserted. It could have been so much easier if they had went with Hunter vs. Austin all along.

SummerSlam 98 was one of the best in the event’s history, but the follow-up was a disappointing affair all around. The only thing we can be thankful for is that The Rock vs. Billy Gunn in a Kiss My Ass match didn’t close out the show.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
