10 Times WWE Got Their Own BAD Ideas WRONG
6. Gable Steveson Is Kurt Angle 2.0…Honest!
WWE immediately hyped Gable Steveson as some hybrid second coming of Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar, and that was a real error of judgement. Steveson was running before he could walk - you’d think the dude was a surefire future Hall Of Famer with the way everyone was banging on about him.
In the end, Gable had 17 matches in total, and only one was on TV. That came at NXT's Great American Bash 2023 vs. Baron Corbin. The bout was lambasted from all comers for exposing how much of an in-ring rookie this Olympian gold winner truly was. Even WWE gave up from there.
Tough. They'd set expectation levels impossibly high with their bullsh*t overhype.
Gable was released in early-May 2024, and he'll go down in history as one of the worst examples of erroneous hyperbole in wrestling. It was a bad idea from the off to tell people Gable was special before he knew what he was doing out there. He had no chance of living up to the Angle and Lesnar comparisons.
