10 Times WWE Pulled The Trigger (When You Least Expected It)
2. Edge Cashes-In On John Cena (New Year's Revolution, 2006)
You could argue that if Edge's Money in the Bank cash-in on John Cena at New Year's Revolution 2006 didn't go down as well as it did, we may have never got another installment of the super-charged match at WrestleMania or the subsequent yearly PPV that followed. Therefore, we could have been deprived of countless show-stealing highlights and even the rise of some of our favourite stars. This moment, then, ranks as one of the wisest trigger pulls in the company's catalogue.
Cena had just battled his way through a gruelling Elimination Chamber match against Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Kane, Carlito and Chris Masters. The leader of the Cenation still reigned as the WWE Champion, but it had come at a physical cost and he was visually battered from the experience.
Cue the Rated 'R' Superstar.
The MITB briefcase holder grimaced down to the ring with disgusting glee, knowing full well what was about to come next. In one of WWE's ultimate acts of painfully excellent timing, Edge would take advantage of a prone Cena and steal his first WWE Championship.
It set the precedent for the briefcase's potential for unbridled chaos and left fans reeling at the series of events they'd just witnessed.
