10 Times WWE Squandered A Genuine Crowd Reaction
2. Roman Reigns Promo Vs. John Cena On Monday Night Raw In 2017
It must be said that Roman Reigns has found himself butchered by terrible timing throughout his decorated career.
As touched upon earlier, he - like Batista in 2014 - had the misfortune of being given the Royal Rumble honours in one of the years where only Daniel Bryan would suffice. Since that moment, fans have pinned their frustrations with the company on the Big Dog and have used him as a scapegoat for all things wrong with WWE.
When in reality, Reigns was just following orders and has simply done what has been asked of him at any given moment - regardless of boos or cheers.
Yet, even though a much needed Reigns heel-turn would never be risked by McMahon, there did lie one moment when the seeds of treachery could have been planted perfectly and WWE obviously chose to go down a safer path.
August 2017 was the time and Monday Night Raw was the place. Roman Reigns was fresh off another Universal title defeat at SummerSlam and John Cena had waltzed into the Big Dog's yard. What happened next could have been a platform for Reigns to fully take advantage of the mixed crowd reaction he was receiving.
Cena tore Reigns to shreds for his lack of initiative as a superstar and even blamed him for Cena's current presence on the show. Instead of blasting the fans who clearly felt that Cena had a point, Reigns played the smarmy bumbling babyface and came across as the Cena-lite star the world had become fed up of.
It was a cop-out on behalf of WWE and another 'passing of the torch' moment didn't provide fans with any new reason to cheer a star who'd had his flaws exposed throughout the feud.
