2. Steve Austin Becomes An Alliance Focal Point

What Happened: The flaky WWF vs. WCW war took another turn when ECW joined forces with the latter to gang up against Vince McMahon's monopolisation of the industry. That led to a 'Winner Takes All' battle at Invasion, and it was there that 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin turned his back on the company that made him to lead the Alliance to victory.

Why It Was Stupid: Fans had been spitting mad for months about Austin's heel turn back at WrestleMania X-Seven, and they were left even more disturbed by his jump to the WCW/ECW side in July. To most, Austin was a WWF guy. It was there that he made himself a household name, not in those other promotions.

Despite the Alliance visibly struggling for star power, it was a mistake to push Austin to the forefront of any anti-WWF movement. He'd only just joined forces with Vince in April, and now he was shunning that in favour of an organisation that had cruelly discarded him years before? It was illogical at best.

Creative continued pushing Austin as a heel when fans badly wanted to cheer their old beer-drinking buddy, and it further arrested thoughts that this was a real inter-promotional feud all over again.
