What Happened: The pipebomb prince and Starrcast III comeback king was on a roll in 2011. He'd finally found a ticket to the upper decks by way of his straight-talking, no-bullsh*t promos, and his in-ring work was reflecting a new found role of top guy.

At Money In The Bank, Punk beat John Cena to become WWE Champ, blew a kiss at Vince McMahon and strolled off into the sunset to do 'other things'. Left with a big hole in their title lineup, WWE decided to crown a new champion (that ended up being Cena) to fill the void and sprint towards 'Champ vs. Champ' at SummerSlam.

Why It Was Stupid: WWE's patience lasted eight days before they crowned a second champion in Punk's absence. That wasn't nearly long enough to keep fans guessing. What had to be packaged as a disastrous piece of business for the company (Punk leaving them in the lurch) ended up being inconsequential.

If they could create a new championship out of thin air and move on, why worry?

Introducing that second belt was a death knell for Punk's vibrance as a want away rebel looking for leverage over the WWE machine. His ascendancy and threat was castrated by WWE's inability to play the long game.
