10 Times WWE Swerved The Fans Just For The Sake Of It

2. Vince McMahon Wins The WWE Title

When Triple H rose to prominence as WWE's top heel in 1999, he immediately started throwing his weight around the company.

That brought him into conflict with Vince McMahon, but as McMahon had officially been ousted from the company as the result of a prior match stipulation, he couldn't really do anything. Still, HHH goaded him into a WWE Championship match on Smackdown, and with no prior buildup, McMahon won his own title belt.

That was pretty dumb in and of itself, but the belt had already been devalued by frequent title changes. What was really frustrating, though, was that the angle had no payoff - Triple H didn't win the belt back from Vince (they'd clash months later in a non-title match); Vince simply vacated it on the following episode of Raw and announced that it would be up for grabs in a six-man match on the next Pay-Per-View - which Triple H won.

There was simply no "part two" of the plan - just an idea to have Vince win the title to get people talking, and then nothing else. At that point, WWE was on fire and pulling record numbers consistently.

This sure wasn't why.
