10 Times WWE Tried (And Failed) To Swerve The Fans

4. The Invasion Angle

Rather than breaking down each individual part of the angle blow-by-blow, it's probably best if we just characterise the entirety of the Invasion as one giant failed swerve.

First, the whole thing was grimly predictable in the sense that no fan could really buy the idea that Shane and Stephanie, throwing together a rag-tag team from the remnants of WCW and ECW, actually posed any serious threat to their father and the WWF.

You also had the tired will he/won't he subplot involving Stone Cold Steve Austin. One minute The Texas Rattlesnake was wearing the colours of The Alliance and the next he was back in the pocket of Vince McMahon.

That the climactic match at Survivor Series should have ended with both Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho swapping sides (or, at the least, attacking their respective teammates) was completely telegraphed in the build-up - and so too was the outcome of the storyline as a whole.
