10 Times WWE Tried (And Failed) To Swerve The Fans
3. Tyson Picks A Side
Much of the build-up to 1998's WrestleMania XIV centred on the tetchy relationship between Stone Cold Steve Austin, scheduled to fight at the event for the WWF Championship, and special guest enforcer Mike Tyson.
For promotional reasons, this made perfect sense. Here you had the biggest name in the world of boxing, and a man who was fast on his way to becoming the biggest name in the world of professional wrestling (certainly in the world of the WWF, anyway).
But there was a third party involved that made the match's outcome predictable to the die-hards. Shawn Michaels had suffered a serious back injury at the Royal Rumble a couple of months earlier, and even though it wasn't clear that it would keep him out for four years, we knew that he would likely need a break from action.
So when Tyson decided on the night to throw a right hand in the direction of the Heartbreak Kid, and not Austin - with whom he had shared a heated confrontation on Raw already - it wasn't really much of a shock at all. This was simply the Texas Rattlesnake's moment.
