10 Times WWE Tried To Present Someone As A Credible Threat (And Failed Miserably)
5. Alberto Del Rio
When Alberto Del Rio burst back onto the scene in 2015 and won the United States title from the new workhorse version of John Cena, fans were ready for the Mexican to finally take off after what was seen as a deeply underwhelming first run in the company from 2010-2014. Del Rio looked legit and it would surely only be a matter of time before he would be holding a world title once again.
WWE had committed to feeding Cena (and his memorable run with the midcard belt) to Del Rio and his new 'MexAmerica' partnership with Zeb Colter was looking as though it could lead to a dominant heel Del Rio bullying his way through the rest of the roster.
Sadly, this wasn't to be the case and a cr*ppy run as the U.S. champ was made that much worse when he was thrown into the putrid League of Nations stable alongside Sheamus, Rusev and Wade Barrett. WWE didn't appear to have any long term plan for Del Rio and instead of doubling down on him after an impressive victory over a top star upon his return, they chose to feed him to Roman Reigns at Survivor Series and shuffled him into an unimaginative faction.
What appeared to be a second coming for the c*cksure armbreaker, soon became another limp tenure and he wandered right back out of the company in 2016.
