10 Times WWE Was Pure Cinema
5. That's Got To Be Kane!
It's pure cinema when the real big bad gets introduced.
The Undertaker was the WWE Champion in 1997, with Paul Bearer having shifted his allegiances to Mankind. When he wouldn't let his father come home, Bearer said that 'Taker's deepest, darkest secret would be revealed to the world.
It turned out that "Mean" Mark Calaway had burned down his childhood home, killing his entire family except Bearer... or so the Deadman thought. His half-brother Kane had escaped and was ready to come to the WWE to seek revenge; as you do. Why didn't anybody go to the police? That's not how wrestling works.
Kane was said to be obsessed with fire ever since the accident, which 'Taker promised Bearer was actually done by the Big Red Machine anyway, which left him scarred and forced to wear a mask.
The backstory was all in place; it was time. With the Deadman facing Shawn Michaels inside Hell in a Cell, the arena turned red and out came the masked man. The reveal of the true villain was like nothing fans had seen before.
It took Kane locking 'Taker in a casket and setting it on fire for the Deadman to finally accept a family match with him. After rising out of the same coffin months later, the contest was set for WrestleMania XIV. The Undertaker won to send his ultimate nemesis back to hell.
